The structure of the pulmonary valve is similar to that of the aortic valve .The pulmonary valve normally has three cusps with a nodule at the mid point of each free edge .(123)
Pulmonary valve disease
The most common pulmonary valve defects are congenital valvular stenosis and valvular regurgitation due to pulmonary hypertension . (124) The pulmonary valve is rarely affected by acquired lesions , simple commissural fusion is seen in congenital stenosis (79)
Pulmonary stenosis is considered the second most common form of congenital heart disease in adults .(125) Congenital stenosis of the pulmonary valve produces an increase of pressure within the right ventricle and atrium .(54)
Pulmonary valve regurgitation
Pulmonary valve regurgitation produces an early diastolic murmur at the upper left of the sternal edge .( 124) Pulmonary regurgitation is usually caused by dilatation of the pulmonary valve ring by hypertension .
