Vascular grafts ma
Vascular grafts maybe biologic or synthetic.
There are three categories of biologic grafts which are autologous grafts ,Allografts and heterografts
Autologous grafts (tissues taken from one part of the body and moved to another part ) are the most desirable , as they are not rejected as a foreign substance , they heal well and are less prone to infection than synthetic replacements . Artery to replace artery is also a goal but most arteries are not expandable . Arteries and veins are large enough to replace the aorta and iliac arteries .
Allografts or homo grafts are tissue from one person transplanted into another . (101)
Heterografts are tissues from another species that are transplanted into a human .(102)
Synthetic (substitute ) arteries were not designed by engineers who used mathematic and logic to produce tubes that simulate the arteries they were intended to replace.
The development was rather haphazard , as each step in the process depended on the advances in medical science that were often not related to surgery of the vascular system . (22)
