ABSTRACT

This research deals with the theory of Orientalism. It examines the terms of Occident and Orient concerning their definitions, use and origins. In this study, the researcher also discusses the Occident representation of the Orient with special attention to Edward Said's theory of Orientalism. Said's theory is mainly tested concerning the fixed Oriental discourse, the unfair representation of the orient as uncivilized, irrational and inferior to the West. Unfortunately, this transferred representation depends on either old translations of Oriental books or past experiences with the Orient during colonialization in the 19th century. In addition to the previous, the researcher tests the capability of applying Said's theory of Orientalism on the Far East. The idea is, for Europeans and Americans there is one Orient whether it is the Middle East or the Far East; it is one fixed entity. At the end, the research in a critical approach projects orientalists' discourse of representation and translation to test their honesty and the presence of Eurocentrism.
