ENG 111
- Basic English Grammar 3rd Ed - Kalyananan
UNIT "1 – 7" OVERVIEW
CHAPTER 1 Using Be
Overview
This chapter presents very simple sentences for near-beginners. The assumption is that all
students of this textbook can read words in English and that the teacher can both model and
monitor good spoken and written English.
The purpose of the lessons in Chapter 1 is to give learners basic phrases for exchanging
information with other speakers of English. Thus, they begin by getting acquainted with each
other. Then the text presents simple statements of definition and description and introduces a
basic vocabulary of nouns and adjectives. Negative verb phrases and contractions are also
presented early so that learners get plenty of practice with them throughout the course. A few
prepositions of place are also illustrated and practiced.
CHAPTER 2 Using Be and Have
Overview
This chapter continues the study of forms of the verb be. Short questions and answers are
introduced, followed by the use of have and has. Possessive adjectives build on the discussion of
subject pronouns in Chapter 1. Demonstrative pronouns (this, that, these, those) complete the
chapter.
CHAPTER 3 Using the Simple Present
Overview
This chapter focuses on the simple present tense. Many languages do not have the variety of
verb tenses that English employs, so learners must adjust their assumptions about the
relationships between real time and the meanings of verb tenses. The simple present tense, the
subject of Chapter 3, is used in talking or writing about repeated, habitual activities. Its main
complication is the addition of -s to a verb whose subject is a singular noun or she/he/it. Final -s
has variations in spelling and pronunciation which are presented in this chapter. Negative and
question forms of the simple present tense (including questions with where, when, and what time)
are also introduced. The chapter concludes with a summary of information questions with be
and do.
CHAPTER 4 Using the Present Progressive
Overview
Chapter 4 introduces the present progressive (or present continuous). This verb form is used
mainly to describe temporary situations at the moment of speaking. Because it adds -ing to the
verb, some attention is given to spelling. Questions and negative forms are introduced, and the
difference between the meanings and uses of simple and progressive present verbs is pointed out
and practiced. Next, students are introduced to common uses of the simple present to express
needs, wants, likes, and thoughts.
CHAPTER 5 Talking About the Present
Overview
This chapter focuses on ways to talk about the present. It begins by showing how to use it _ be
to talk about time and weather, and there _ be for descriptions. Two sections on prepositions of
place follow. Common uses of the simple present to express needs, wants, and likes expand
students’ ability to talk about the present. Several pages of review for this chapter and previous
ones complete the unit.
CHAPTER 6 Nouns and Pronouns
Overview
This chapter begins with the basic parts of a simple sentence, leading students to identify the
parts with the traditional grammatical terms “subject,” “verb,” “object,” “preposition,” and
“object of a preposition.” These terms are used in the charts and exercises in the rest of the
student book. The basic notions of countability and plurality are introduced, as well as some
commonly used irregular forms.
CHAPTER 7 Count and Noncount Nouns
Overview
The basic notions of countability and plurality are introduced in this chapter as well as several
elements of noun phrases, including adjectives, articles, and phrases of measurement. Questions
and negatives with some and any complete the chapter.
