Anatomy of the heart
There have been few attempts to describe the nuances of cardiac anatomy as perceived by the surgeon . (1) The heart is actually two separated pumps, a right heart that pumps blood through the lungs and a left heart that pumps blood through the peripheral organs , each of these two pumps is comprised of two chambers , an atrium and a ventricle located between the atria and ventricles on both sides of the heart are the atrioventricular valves which normally allow blood to flow from the atrium to the ventricle but prevent backward flow from the ventricles to the atria . The right. valve is called the tricuspid valve , and the left is called the pulmonary valve , the walls of the heart called the mycardium are composed primary of cardiac muscles cells
(myocytes ). The heart is a hollow. muscular organ slightly bigger than a clenched fist. The walls of the heart are made of muscle which has a special interacting property .The heart is situated in the middle of mediastinum where it is partially overlapped by the neighboring lung . The weight and size of the heart varies depending on age, sex , body , length , espicardial fat , and general nutrition . (39)
