Atrail septal defects are non – valvular and are one of the more prevalent forms of congenital heart lesion.(50)Atrial septal defect, the opening between right atrium and left atrium, should be closed shortly after birth.(52)
Classification of atrial septal defect
There are several morphologic variants of this defect. (53)
ASD are classified according to their embryogenesis and make up more than 80% of cases .
1-Ostium secundum
2-Ostium primum
3-Sinus venosus
4-coronary sinus
The most common type of ASD is the ostium secundum generally occurs in isolation. It is located centrally in the atrialseptum. The ostium primum ASD, is the second most common type.(54)
Treatment
Atrail septal defects may be closed in a variety of ways, generally most surgeons prefer to repair the defect under direct vision,(50)where a small defect less than 2 cm in diameter can usually be closed with suture, if the defect is larger, a dacron patch is sewn over the hole. (41)
