Classification of fibers used in medical textiles
The raw materials basis in the production of industrial textiles continues to expand rapidly, most spectacular has been the growth in demand for high – performance natural fiber or synthetic fibers (2)
Biomedical fibers can be classified according to biodegradability, materials that are absorbed by the body two to three months (or longer) after implantation are considered as biodegradable. These include polyamide, some polyurethane, collagen and alginate. Although cotton and viscose rayon are biodegradable, they are not used as implants. Materials such as polyester. Polypropylene ,polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE),and carbon are not absorbed by the body so are considered non-biodegradable (4)
Fibers used in medicine may also be classified depending on whether they are natural or man made fibers
