Diagnosis and trea
Diagnosis and treatment
AVSD usually occur early in infancy as a result of the large increase in pulmonary blood flow associated with increased pulmonary artery pressure and insufficiency of the common atrioventricular valve.
Both single patch and two patch technique have been reported to close the atrial septal defect and ventricular septal defect .(46)
Tetralogy of fallot
Tetralogy may be associated with other cardiac anomalies including patent ducts arteries, atrial septal defect, corrected transposition of the great vessels and dextro cardiac. (51) This is the usually cause of a blue babies who survive the first year of life. The baby is cyanosed from birth or shortly afterwards, but most babies with this defect die during the first few weak or months after birth. (52
Treatment
Patents who have only a moderate degree of pulmonary stenosis and minimal cyanosis can wait until they are old enough and large enough to undergo complete correction of the defects. Operation is usually undertaken between 5 and 10 years of age and a patch is inserted in the VSD .(52)
