Abstract: Urbanization is a manifestation of the process of transformation of society and more recently of globalization.
It isestimated that by the year 2008, more than half the human
population, of 3.3 billion people will be living in urban areas. Thisnumber is expected to swell to 5 billion
by 2030. The world’s urban population has grown from 220 million to 2.8 billion overthe twentieth century. This scale of growth is expected to continue in the next couple of decades
with Africa and Asia
witnessing major growth. By 2030 the towns
and cities of the developing
world will make up 80 per cent of urban humanity.
