Geotextiles in roa
Geotextiles in road construction
Road paving is a well – established, and possibly the most common use
of geotextiles. In many parts of the world, earth roads are built with soil or
low grade aggregate , either for reasons of economy and supply or for the
evolution of high grade road, at stages .
They usually have a structure consisting of subgrade , base and
surfacing layers . With a weak subgrade it is often impossible to build a
stable base course without losing expensive aggregate material into the
subgrade. (22)
Soil, as a wellknow fact, is inherently strong in compression and shear
, but weak in tension . In recent years, the technique of reinforcing subgrade
soil structures by incorporating geotextiles that posses much higher tensile
stiffness and strength than soil, and the capability to bond with soil through
friction / adhesion , has gained increasing applications in roads paving.
In general , geotextiles are more economical , more easily handled and
constructed , and are more resistant to corrosion and bacterial action than
many traditional materials , including metals. (11)
