Roads types
and construction techniques
The purpose of the road structure is to spread the loads imposed by a
vehicle over a sufficiently wide area of the underlying soil, so that the
applied stress is less than soils bearing capacity . If the underlying soil is
a well – graded sand and gravel, this will have a high bearing capacity .
For geotextile design purpose , road may be subdivided into two
categories : paved and unpaved roads. Paved roads are defined as those where
the upper part of the pavement structure consists of bound materials such as
concrete , asphalt or bitumen macadam . Unpaved roads are defined as those
where this bound material is absent and the road consists of only unbound
aggregate . (9)
