Types of dry heat
Types of dry heat sterilization
Red heat
Inoculating wires, loops and points of forceps are sterilized by holding them in the flame of a Benson burner until they are red
Flaming
Direct exposure for a few seconds may be used for scalpels and the necks of flasks
Hot air sterilized
Hot air sterilizes are used to process materials which can withstand high temperatures for of the length of time needed for sterilization by dry heat. (134)
Microwave oven
Ovens are often used for sterilizing dry materials such as glassware, syringes and needles, powders and gauze dressings. Petrolatum and other oil substances must also be sterilized with dry heat in an oven .(135)
-Sterilization by irradiation
The use of radiation for sterilization is becoming more popular. It is well known that even at low dosages, radiation may cause significant changes in physical properties through chain scission. (101) Radiation is the technique used on heat sensitive materials. It is an industrial – scale process, normally using cobalt .(134)
