Good Teacher

The characteristics of a good language teacher

Teachers are guardians of civilizations and the language teacher is no exception. He comes across a lot of difficult situations wherein he is supposed to act out a lot of roles, such as helper, manager etc. A confident teacher can overcome most problems in the classroom. A good teacher should help students through a structured process. He should be willing to explain and to motivate his students. He should always be there for their guidance and encouragement. He should explain the rules of the language very clearly using concrete examples. He should show patience when the students make mistakes. He should help the students to learn the new language as much as the students require.

A good language teacher should give equal importance and focus to all the language skills. He should teach the second language in the same way as a mother language is acquired. Listening, speaking, reading and then writing should be the order for teaching and learning the target language. To achieve the highest standard of excellence, the teacher should prepare his lessons before going to class, have a variety of methodologies and techniques and be flexible in bringing in more and more variations for effective teaching.

As AV aids are more effective in teaching a language, a teacher should bring the real-life incidents or objects into the class to show reality and stimulate interest. He should be able to assess students on the basis of performance, not on the students' personal qualities. He should set high standards for his students and hold the students to those standards. He should have a sixth sense as to when a student needs extra attention and be ready to extend it. He should make the class student-centered rather than teacher-centered. Students should be given individual tasks, pair work and group activities.

Briefly speaking, all of these above-mentioned qualities define just some of the characteristics of a good language teacher. However, a teacher should also have the potential to switch to roles of motivator, helper, manager and problem-solver. He should be well dressed, well mannered, a confident speaker and an experienced assessor. He should keep a balanced eye on all the students.  He should be committed, motivated, dedicated and have mastery over his subject for effective teaching.
