Not the true topaz of mineralogists, but a yellow variety of quartz, which closely resembles topaz in color though not in other physical characters; it is of much less value than true topaz. Known under a variety of geographical names such as Bohemian topaz, Indian topaz, Madagascar topaz, Madeira topaz, and Spanish topaz. Brazilian topaz is the true mineral. Also called quartz topaz.; smoky quartz.
